Real-Time, High-Precision Elemental Data
The Neutron Generator Elemental Analyser is a cutting-edge cross-belt sensor that combines advanced neutron generation with smart technology to support real-time, data-driven decision-making in mining.
Using Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA), it provides continuous, direct measurement of key elements such as iron (Fe), aluminium (Al), silicon (Si), potassium (K), sulfur (S), titanium (Ti), calcium (Ca), and more—capturing data across the full material profile. Sensitivity varies depending on the element, with particularly high accuracy for iron, sulfur, calcium, mercury, and titanium, allowing operators to monitor critical components with confidence and optimise process control in real time.
Real-Time Process Optimisation is Critical for Success in Mining Operations
Overview
At Real Time Instruments, we provide innovative, real-time solutions for process optimisation in mining and bulk material handling. Our advanced online elemental cross-belt analysers use Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) to deliver accurate, continuous measurements of key elements—minute by minute—across the entire material stream.
Designed with a lightweight, modular structure and flexible configuration options, RTI’s analysers integrate easily into existing operations. They offer a smart, cost-effective alternative to traditional sampling methods—helping you enhance process control, boost efficiency, and maximise return on investment.
Why Neutron Generators Supersede Isotopic Source?
The AllScan n‑Gen uses a deuterium-deuterium fusion neutron generator, eliminating the need for outdated radioactive sources like Cf‑252. Unlike isotopes, this technology produces stable, high-yield neutrons without decay, delivering consistent performance over time. By removing the need for an radioactive source, the neutron source can be switched on or off, reducing radiation exposure during installation and maintenance.
With built-in PGNAA (Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis) capability, the system irradiates material directly on the conveyor belt and detects prompt gamma emissions. This allows for real-time measurement of elements such as Fe, Al, Si, S, Ca, and more—improving process control and minimising delays in material optimisation.
What is a Neutron Generator Elemental Analyser?
A Neutron Generation Elemental Analyser is a real-time, on-belt sensor that uses a switchable neutron generator to measure the elemental composition of bulk materials. Unlike traditional analysers that rely on radioactive isotopes like Cf-252, this technology uses a controlled neutron source that can be turned on or off—improving safety and simplifying compliance.
It works by emitting neutrons that interact with the material on the conveyor belt. The analyser then detects the unique gamma rays released by each element. This technique, known as Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA), allows operators to accurately identify elements such as iron, silicon, aluminium, sulfur, calcium, and more—without interrupting the flow of material.
Where to Use a Neutron Generator Elemental Analyser
Neutron generation elemental analysers are widely used in mining, cement, coal, and mineral processing industries. They are typically installed over conveyor belts for ore grade control, stockpile management, and blending optimisation.
This technology is especially useful in environments where safety regulations restrict the use of isotopic sources. It’s also valuable in operations that require precise, continuous elemental data to reduce waste, improve recovery, and ensure consistent product quality.
PGNAA Technology Explained
Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) is a non-destructive, real-time elemental analysis technique used in mining and bulk material handling. It works by bombarding materials with neutrons and measuring the gamma rays emitted in response. Each element gives off a unique gamma signature, allowing the analyser to accurately identify and quantify elements such as Fe, Si, Al, S, Ca, Ti, and more.
Unlike traditional sampling methods, PGNAA provides continuous, on-belt measurement without interrupting the material flow. This allows operators to make faster, data-driven decisions, improve ore grade control, and optimise process efficiency across the entire operation.

Benefits of the Neutron Generator Elemental Analyser
Elemental analyzers provide continuous, real-time analysis of material composition directly on the conveyor belt. By identifying deviations from quality specifications instantly, operators can divert substandard ore before it reaches the shipping stage, ensuring only compliant material is dispatched.
Real-time elemental data enables operators to adjust processing parameters promptly, such as reagent dosing or blending ratios. This immediate feedback loop enhances process stability, optimizes resource usage, and improves overall plant efficiency.
By installing elemental analyzers at various stages—such as post-crusher, pre-blending, and pre-processing—operators gain a comprehensive view of material composition throughout the production line. This holistic insight aids in quality assurance and process optimization.
Continuous monitoring allows for the swift detection of any anomalies in material composition. Early identification of such deviations enables immediate corrective actions, minimizing potential disruptions and maintaining product quality.
The integration of real-time elemental analysis with process control systems facilitates dynamic adjustments to operations. This synergy ensures optimal performance, reduces waste, and enhances throughput by adapting to material variability instantaneously.
Elemental analyzers enable precise control over stockpile composition by providing real-time data on incoming material. Operators can strategically manage stockpile inputs to achieve desired grade specifications, ensuring consistent quality and reducing the need for reprocessing.
